In the church the remains of Hildegard from Bingen are kept in the Hildegardis shrine. Annually on the 17th September, the day of her death, hundreds of pilgrims pour into Eibingen to take part in the relic procession in honour of the saint. Parish Church Heilig Kreuz (Holy Cross) Assmannshausen The church was built over a period of several decades during the 14th cen-tury. It was first mentioned in the records in 1325. The High Altar, formerly crucifi-xion altar, was replaced in 1872 by a win-ged altar in Gothic style. This has set into its central part a painting from the school of M. Grünewald (15th century), which had been donated to the church. Lutheran Church Built in 1855 as first Lutheran church in the Rheingau area. Worth seeing is the “Grapevine” win-dow, dated 1968 with biblical allegories of the wine. Catholic parish church St Jakobus The church St Jakobus on the market square dates back to the 14th century and is said to be built by Knight Johann Brömser. The bell tower is coronated by a weather vane with half-moon and star as rememberance of the Crusades, which Brömser attended. It was rebuilt with rhenish quarry stone after it was almost totally demolished in 1944. The toomstones of the Rüdes-heim nobelmen from the Middle Ages as well as the gothic tympanum are of interest. Benedictine Abbey of St Hildegard Visit the Abbey of St Hildegard situated among the vineyards above Rüdes-heim. We are a monastic community of 55 nuns who live according to the Rule of St Benedict. We seek to make per-ceptible in our contemporary time a way of life that is lived in a balance prayer and work, of contemplation and action, in seclusion yet offering hospitality. Whoever comes to us upon the hill will enjoy first and foremost the magnificent panorama of the Middle Rhine Valley. You can visit our abbey church where you may linger in the silence and pea-cefully contemplate the frescos, painted in the style of the Beuron School of Art, which are unique and truly worth see-ing. We invite you, thereafter, to browse in our information center and in the monastery store. There you will find a very large selection of books, cards and artwork as well as vintage wines, cham-pagnes, and liqueurs produced in our own monastery winery. We also offer a large palette of delicious and healthy 12
