Empire after the French-German war 1870/71. Main figure is the Germania, holding up the german Emperor´s crown in her right hand and the imperial sword in her left hand. The panoramic views from the monu-ment reach wide into the Rhine and Nahe Valley. Enjoy a carriage ride through Nieder-wald forest from the monument. Temple on the Niederwald The lookout “temple”, which Graf von Ostein also built as an added attraction in 1788, became the focus point of several great intellectuals during the Romantic period of the 19th century. Visitors included (amongst others) Brentano, Beethoven and Goethe. In November 1944, allied bombers dest-royed the temple, which was reinaugu-rated in 2006 after a complete recon-stuction. CASTLES AND BUILDINGS Enchanted Cave The “Enchanted Cave”, built around 1790, is a tunnel, approx. 60 meters in length, the walls of which were decora-ted with glittering glass. It opens out into a rotunda, the “Enchanted Cot-tage”, which was originally lined with mirrors. The illusion, as one came out of the semi-dark glittering corridor into the glaring light of the Enchanted Cottage, was as if a magician with a long beard and magic wand had revealed a visual “aisle” to the Rhine were the visitor found themselves in the “enchanting world” of nature. “Red wine alcove” Assmannshausen The alcove, which was erected for the production of a German cinema film „I am the other one”, was rebuilt by the Assmannshauser in 2007 on an out-look point. It lies on the Rheinsteig route and can be reached from Ass-mannshausen in about 30 hiking minu-tes. With its magnificent view over the steep vineyard slopes and the romantic Rhine valley, it is an attractive stopping point. 11 Rhine Province. Until 1974, it served as a navigational station. Romantic Castle Rheinstein Symbol of the Rhine romantic – The history of the castle originates in the 13th century. In 1823 it was bought by a Prince of Prussia and he rebuilt the castle, generally in the sense of the Rhine Romantic. It can be reached comfortably on foot in 20 minutes from the Niederwald Monument or by chair-lift from Ass-mannshausen to the Jagdschloss Niederwald, from here the castle is only another 10 minutes away on foot. Near the Rossel is the “Enchanted Cave”.
