A town landmark, the huge archi-tecture with the enormous tower is a testament to the imposing claim to power of the builder, Archbishop Balduin of Trier. The well fortified site has been fulfilling several goals since it was built around 1335, securing the territory, bringing home to the citizens of the town the presence of the local lord and not least bringing the coveted Rhine tax into the coffers of the elector. Indeed even in 1265, King Richard of Cornwall had a tower erected in Boppard to secure his claim to power to the German crown against Alfons of Castile. This is proven by newer building history investigations which took place in the course of the pre-investiga-tion for the current restoration of the castle. In the contemporary centuries the elector's castle underwent destruction, rebuilding, conversion and expansion. It served amongst other things to accommodate the customs office, town constabulary and police station and also as the county court, pri-son, sick bay and residence. For the last 100 years it has also been the home of the town museum with the famous Thonet exhibi-tion. The elector's castle is being thoroughly renovated and restored in the course of the world heritage programme of the Federal Republic of Germany with a cost volume of € 8.7 m. During the construction period (2009-2013) the elector's castle and museum are not accessible. Rheinallee/Burgstraße | Tel. +49 (0)6742-3888 MAP OF TOWNB 6 – 7
